About

Oxford Lindy Hoppers was formed at the end of July 2008 by Al, Becky, Helen and Nancy as a not-for-profit social dance group. The remit of the group is to increase the number of social dance events available to Lindy Hoppers in Oxford and the surrounding area. The first Hop the Hall social dance was held in August 2008 and not a single month has passed since without this event being run. As the group began to grow, there was a demand for classes as well as social dancing opportunities. In September 2009 Nancy and Richard launched Cowley Cotton Club (CCC) which has been brilliantly supported by local dancers. Due to demand, in 2012 we are changing our CCC structure to offer even more classes.

The current committee (for administrative purposes and making sure the classes and events run smoothly) is formally comprised of Helen, Nancy, Richard, Al, Mary, Joel, Maura and Vivien.

If you are keen to get involved then just get in touch (oxfordlindyhoppers@gmail.com).

If you have an event that you’d like to run with us then feel free to ask OLH for advice and support.

Other places to learn and dance Lindy Hop

  • For more Lindy lessons in the Oxford area, look no further than the Oxford Swing Dance Society. They also teach Balboa on Monday nights.
  • Aylesbury has classes on Tuesday evenings, known as The Lindy Diner – with Andy and Anna.

Dance shoes
You’ll need a proper pair of dance shoes before long! We recommend something that is smooth and slightly slippery leather or suede soles are the best for dancing.

Our friends at Dance Locker stock a great range of dance shoes (including the two main brands, Aris Allen and Bleyer). Click here and go to footwear to see what they have in store.

Music and swing

Would you like a nice basic little mix for your iPod? We’ve put one together for ya: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewIMix?id=324679902. Alternatively, ask at Cowley Cotton Club for one of our CDs.

For an overview on all things swing, nothing beats Wikipedia:

Social dancing etiquette
We all need a little advice when going to a dance for the first time.  How do you ask someone to dance? What on earth should you bring with you?  Fear not, the following link has it all:

Improve your dancing
Once you’ve started having fun, you may want to get better quickly so you can have even more fun! Dancers typically go to as many lessons as possible, social dance at every opportunity, sign up for workshops and go to camps both here in the UK and abroad. But if you’d like some inspiration on your lunch hour, read on!

Vintage clothing and the ‘swing look’
Nothing separates the hep cats from the hipsters like swing clothing. Though not every swing dancer embraces the past through fashion, why not have a go? Once you go vintage, you’ll never go back!
