About Oxford Lindy Hoppers

Oxford Lindy Hoppers is a non-profit community-based group founded in 2008. Our mission is to get the people swing dancing and honour its history as a vibrant, subversive expression of joy amid segregation, created by Black artists. We run regular classes and social events in Oxford and also organise the internationally attended Oxford Lindy Exchange and Oxford Swing Festival.

How do I start dancing with you?

You can drop in to any of our regular fun and friendly classes and socials.

Tuesdays: Swing Fix; Thursdays: Fire Station Swing.

We teach the joyful dance that is Lindy Hop, as well as other Swing Era dances, including Charleston, Collegiate Shag and solo jazz.

On each class night, we offer classes suitable for beginners (yes, even you!). We build things up gradually so you can get out on the dance floor after your first lesson.

What are these regular classes and socials?

  • Swing Fix: Tuesdays. Runs most of the year except latter half of December. The All-Levels class runs 20:00 to 21:00. This is followed by social dancing from 21:00 until 22:15.
    • We also hold a fast-track series of classes from 19:00 to 20:00, which sometimes requires you to have some experience in swing dancing. Get in touch to find out what the next series is by joining our weekly newsletter, or through our Facebook or Instagram.
  • Fire Station Swing: Thursdays. A progressive series of classes, which you can book in advance. Check out our events calendar for term dates.
  • Hop The Hall: First Friday of the month. Oxford’s longest-running swing dance social, on the first Friday of every month. A very friendly and relaxed event, welcoming dancers of all abilities and often visitors from different cities (and continents!) as Oxford’s DJs get you grooving.

What should I expect from a class?

  • The Swing Fix All-Levels class and the Fire Station Swing classes are drop-in, though we strongly recommend you consistently attend the FSS classes as they are progressive.
  • There is no need to bring a partner. All of our classes are fun and social.
  • We rotate partners throughout our classes. This is a great way to meet people and learn by dancing with different partners, and you’ll find that you learn more quickly by dancing with different people.
  • No special clothing is required to dance Lindy Hop – just make sure you are wearing something comfortable and be aware that you will get very warm! We recommend that you wear shoes without too much grip: flat or low-heeled shoes with smooth or slightly slippery soles are ideal.

Can I hire you?

Yes you can! We run private classes for individuals, wedding dances, parties and festivals and are also available for performances and floor warming at your social function.
